8 Packing Tips for Your Arizona Vacation
Warm weather, pool days, golfing, hiking, walking, cycling, cocktails and sight seeing: these are the things to consider when packing for Phoenix, Arizona.
Phoenix is the capital of the southwestern U.S. state of Arizona. Known for its year-round sun and warm temperatures, multicity metropolitan area known as the Valley of the Sun. It provides a much-needed break from the ever-lasting Northern winter, and more importantly a reset for your minds & spirit. Packing comes pretty-easy when the only item on the itinerary is soaking up vitamin D.
To provide you with a little help and to ensure that you don't forget anything, we have compiled 8 helpful tips on packing for your Phoenix vacation.
1. NO NEED TO DRESS TO IMPRESS
You don’t need a lot of clothing when vacationing in Phoenix. Most dress casual; dressed up can be as easy-breezy as a golf shirt for gents, shorts, jeans, a pair of casual pants and some capris and a nice top for ladies. Bring a couple of swim suits, a few shorts which you can pair with several different tops.
For footwear, you’ll find that you live in flip-flops, walking shoes, hiking boots and of course golf shoes and golf clothing if you like to golf.
2. THINK ABOUT THE OUTDOOR ADVENTURES
Don’t forget that the sun here is very strong! While you’re out enjoying yourself, you are going to want to wear a hat with a brim and sunglasses, as well as a strong SPF, sunscreen. the better.
SNACKS – Exploring takes a lot of energy, so always bring snacks, nuts, dried fruit, energy bars. Walking shoes, hiking boots and retractable walking sticks are things to bring if you want to hit the mountains. In addition, 2 things you may want to bring are a fine comb for flicking away cholla cactus buds that may attack your skin or clothes and also a whistle if you should need assistance while exploring the desert.
3. A SMALL BAG OR A WAIST PACK
A light backpack makes it much easier to carry bulky things like water and sunscreen. Plus, it’s better for your back and it leaves your hands free for snapping photos. make sure it has enough room for all the essentials for your trip, especially water and sunscreen.
You may want to buy a Medium Waist Pack with Water Bottles. This style of waist pack includes one or two dedicated water bottle pockets and one or two dedicated water bottles designed to fit inside the pockets. If you enjoy long hikes, you may want to consider a hydration pack.
4. REUSABLE WATER BOTTLES
WATER – The air in Arizona is very dry, so you might find yourself feeling thirsty faster than you’d expect; as a result, dehydration is common. So, start drinking water as soon as you arrive even if you are not thirsty, this way you will avoid unnecessary headaches! If you are flying, make sure to drink a lot of water during your flight.
Carry more water than you think you will need. Double the amount of water that you would normally bring. You may want to consider buying water bottles in stainless steel, which maintain your drink cold for many hours.
5. LAYERS OF CLOTHING
The Arizona desert temperatures can fluctuate 30-40 degrees in one day, so be sure to pack light layers for daytime and others that will keep you warm in the evenings, when the sun sets and cooler air moves in..
6. USE YOUR BACK PACK AS YOUR PERSONAL CARRY ON
This is not only practical but will get you into the Arizona mood from the minute you leave your house!Be sure you have everything you need for at least 1 night in your carryon and you’ll reduce your stress level immensely. In particular, pack any necessary medications or items you can’t live without.
You also may like to pack a cotton sundress, extra undies and a pair of flip-flops in addition to your toiletries.To make the best of it in case you get delayed in another city, throw in a few granola bars, a bag of nuts and another snack. Bring an empty bottle of water, so you can fill it up at the airport if you are flying.
7. LEAVE YOUR POOL TOWELS AND TOILETRIES AT HOME

8. SUNSCREEN, BANDAGES OR A SMALL FIRST AID KIT
Small scrapes and scratches and blisters happen, so be prepared! Everyone knows that a cool bandage makes everything feel better.
Pack plenty of sunscreen to protect your skin. Don’t forget to reapply it often. You’ll also want a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses to protect your eyes. Make sure to pack your lip balm with UV protection.
Phoenix’s “dry heat” equals dry skin. A favorite hydrating ingredient of many who live in the dry, Arizona desert is aloe. If you prefer to buy your beauty products once in Arizona, Trader Joe's has a great selection and it is also walking distance from our condos.
