Suggested DAY TRIPS from Ahwatukee

October 22, 2017

We love asking our guests who choose Phoenix Vacation Condos again and again for their vacation getaways, some questions.  Marianne McVey has stayed many times and kindly agreed to tell us about her favorite day trips. Thank you Mari for sharing with us.

Oak Creek Canyon  - approximately 138 miles

Oak Creek Canyon is a river gorge located in northern Arizona between the cities of Sedona and Flagstaff. The canyon is often described as a smaller cousin of the Grand Canyon because of its scenic beauty. IF you don’t have time to go to see the Grand Canyon, this is a highly recommended day trip. More info.

Appache Junction – Goldfield Ghosttown – approximately 60 miles

Visit Goldfield Ghost Town and walk down Main Street to explore the many shops and historic buildings. Tour the historic Mammoth Gold Mine and visit the Goldfield Museum. Pan for gold and then take a ride on Arizona’s only narrow gauge train. Spend a fun filled day, rich in wild west history! Have lunch at The Mammoth Steakhouse and Saloon. More info

Sedona – approximately 130 miles

Sedona nestles among a geological wonderland and is famous for its red rocks. Multi-hued stone formations jut upwards from the high desert floor creating a vivid, mesmerizing setting that changes hourly with the light. It is suggested that IF you go to Sedona, consider spending another hour or so to drive through Oak Creek Canyon.

Maricopa and Wild Horses – approximately 20 miles

Part of the city of Maricopa is within the boundaries of the Ak-Chin Indian Community. The small, federally recognized tribe has developed Harrah's Ak-Chin Casino and related resort, a multi-entertainment cinema complex, and golf course, all open to the public. If you’re lucky, you may even see the famous 600 to 1,000 wild horses pictured on the link below as you travel to and from Maricopa.

Mission San Xavier del Bacapproximately 110 miles

Mission San Xavier del Bac is a historic Spanish Catholic mission founded in 1692 and located about 10 miles south of Tucson on the route to Nogales. Click on the link below for more info.

Nogales approximately 165 miles

Nogales is Arizona's largest and most popular Mexican border town situated across the border from Nogales, Mexico. This is a great place to experience the Mexican culture. I-19 from Tuscon to Nogales is the only road in the USA where distance signage is measured in kilometers! Take your passport with you, and IF you wish, you can park your vehicle in a large secured/gated paid parking area and cross the border by foot. You are advised to NOT drive your rental vehicle in Mexico. A high wall separates Arizona from Mexico. On your return from Nogales to Phoenix, be prepared to stop at a border check-point to have your passport and vehicle checked. Click on the link below for more info.
